RALEIGH – The N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs will hold its annual meeting at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at the N.C. Association of Educators, 700 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh. The following new and returning Commission members will be sworn into office:
New Members:
- Sam Lambert, Eastern Band of Cherokee
- Charles Richardson, Haliwa Saponi Indian Tribe
- Marvel Welch, Eastern Band of Cherokee
Returning Members:
- W.D. Baucom, Metrolina Native American Association Incorporated
- Chassidy Hall, Meherrin Indian Tribe
- Daniel Jones, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina
- Brett A. Locklear, Triangle Native American Society Inc.
- Faline Locklear-Dial, Speaker of the House Appointee
- Roy Maynor, Cumberland County Association for Indian People
Commission members are selected by their respective tribes and associations. The swearing in ceremony will be conducted by the Honorable Wayne Goodman, Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshall. The Commission also will elect its Vice Chairman and Secretary Treasurer and appoint its committee chairpersons and committees for the next fiscal year.
Randi Byrd, of the American Indian Center at the University of North Carolina, will present on the status of Healthy, Native North Carolinians, a program funded by a grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. The initiative expands a partnership with UNC on the American Indian Healthy Eating Project, which was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and will be featured in the September issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
