Single car collision on Spur in Park results in fatality

Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers responded to a single-car collision on the northbound Spur at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 between the Legion Bridge and Beech Branch Road where a 2013 Honda Civic hit a tree.

A 26-year-old female from Sneedville, Tenn., Ashley M. Trent, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people were transported to the UT Medical Center including Brent J. Clapper, 27-year-old male from Seymour, Tenn.; Sherice R. Mathes, 23-year-old female from Bybee, Tenn.; and Joshua M. Sizemore, 24-year-old male from Morristown, Tenn..

The Gatlinburg Police Department and Gatlinburg Fire Department provided assistance. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting park rangers with the ongoing investigation.
