GREENSBORO – For the third year in a row, seven-time defending state champions Bishop McGuinness (23-7) played the role of the villain and ended the Lady Braves season in the 1A Western Regional Final.  Cherokee (28-3) lost 58-56 to the Lady Villains on Saturday, March 9 at the Fleming Arena at UNC-G.

Avery Mintz led the Lady Braves with 30 points.  She also had five assists and 13 rebounds and was named the Most Valuable Player for the 1A Western Regional Basketball Tournament. Cherokee led 16-12 after the first period, but trailed at halftime 30-28.

The second half was dead even at 28-28, and Bishop would take the two point win and advance to the state final.

Other Lady Braves scorers included:  Deija Burgess 4, Brianna Jumper 2, Alexis Maney 6, Jordyn Thompson 8 and Kendall Toineeta 6.  Toineeta was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Villains were led by Julia Brown with 14 points and Tessa Johnston with 13.
