Shirley Ann Smith Newcomer, 67, of Cashiers, died on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital in Cashiers.
Born Tuesday, July 11, 1944 in Deaf Smith, Texas, Shirley was the daughter of the late Buford Ray Smith, Sr. and Eleanor Grace Moser Smith.
She was a member of Heady Mountain Baptist Church in Cashiers and worked as a Press Operator at the Consolidated Metco plant until its closing in Cashiers. It was said by the family that she liked things simple and was liked by all who knew her. She was loved and will be missed.
Surviving are two sons of the home James Henery Newcomer and Phillip George Newcomer; four brothers Buford, Tom, Jerry and Gilbert Smith all of Cherokee; four sisters, Janice Faus of Sylva, Corky Swayney of Cherokee, Alice Caley of Cherokee, Kathleen Smith of Johnson City, Tenn. and nine grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by husband John Raymond Newcomer and one brother, Phillip Smith.
A funeral service will be at 2pm on Wednesday at Long House Funeral Home, Inc. located at 407 Wolfetown Road, Cherokee, North Carolina, 28719, with Brother Dan Conseen officiating and Bill Henderson, Cody Swayney, Toby Smith, Buford Smith, Jamie Swayney and Greg Smith acting as pall bearers. Immediately following the funeral the interment will be in the Smith Family Cemetery, Cherokee.
The family will receive friends from 7-9pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Long House Funeral Home, Inc.
