The Cherokee Lady Braves varsity basketball team (22-4) advanced to the Sectional Round of the 2011 NCHSAA Women’s Basketball 1-A West Tournament with two big wins in the first two rounds. Cherokee destroyed Blue Ridge 73-22 in the first round and defeated Mitchell 76-61 in the district round.
The Lady Braves are now set to face Highlands (17-11) in the Sectional Round on Friday, Feb. 25 at Highlands High School. The Lady Highlanders advanced with wins over Cherryville 62-42 and Hayesville 54-38.
Avery Mintz is lighting it up for the Lady Braves with 25 total points in the first two games including 17 against Mitchell.
Murphy (21-5), Smokey Mountain Conference tournament champions, also advanced to the Sectional Round. The Lady Bulldogs took apart T. Jefferson 78-35 in the first round and beat Highland Tech 62-46 in the District Round. They face E. Surry (12-12) at Murphy High School on Friday. E. Surry surprised Robbinsville (18-6) in the District Round as they defeated the Lady Black Knights by two points 50-48.
