“Shatter the Silence, Stop the Violence” was the theme for the first annual Take Back the Night event held in Cherokee on Thursday, April 29.  The event, hosted by the EBCI Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, featured a walk from the Cherokee Visitor’s Center parking lot to the UNITY field and then on to the Oconaluftee Island Park.

Once on the Island, the Awohali Singers, a local northern-style pow wow group, sang an honor song as “silent witnesses”, cutouts representing abuse and assault victims, were placed at the center of the Pavillion on the Island.

Candles were lit and a moment of silence was observed in honor of survivors of abuse and violence.

After a short speech by Jennifer Standingdeer of the Heart to Heart program, candles were lit and a moment of silence was observed in honor of survivors of violence or assault.
