One question that keeps circulating is “why are we participating in athletics when we’re not attending school?”

Dvdaya Swimmer and Tyce Hogner both placed at the Smoky Mountain Conference middle school championship held at Kituwah on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Jaylynne Esquivel, a member of the Cherokee High School cross country team, took second place in the girls race at the Smoky Mountain Conference championships held at Kituwah just outside of Cherokee on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 6.  

Cherokee Middle School and High School played host to three other squads – Murphy, Swain Co., and Robbinsville – for meets on the sunny, but chilly, afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 9. 

I would like to give a pat on the back for the wonderful job being done by the Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) Athletics team in keeping everyone as safe as possible during these trying times.

The Cherokee High School (CHS) and Middle School (CMS) cross country teams traveled to the Kituwah Mound area as Swain County High School hosted a multi-school meet on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 18. 

With sports across the state of North Carolina starting back on Monday, Nov. 16 following months of shutdown due to COVID-19, volleyball players will have to add another piece of equipment to their uniform – masks. 

Braden Taylor, a senior at Cherokee High School (CHS) and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has signed a letter of intent to wrestle next year at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont.
