Five tribal members from Cherokee, Swain and Robbinsville High Schools traveled to Greensboro to participate in the NCHSAA tournament on Feb. 21-22 with several individuals walking away with medals.

The Lady Braves proved why they received the #1 seed in the western Section of the 1A state playoffs with a signature win over the Mitchell Lady Mountaineers on Monday, Feb. 24 at the Charles George Arena. Cherokee won big 77-37 behind 23pts by Avery Mintz and 16 by Kendall Toineeta.

The Braves have found their range again. Following a rough shooting game (28 percent) in the Big Smoky Mountain Conference championship game last week, Cherokee, the #7 seed in the western Section, shot a much better 40 percent on Monday, Feb. 24 as they defeated #10 seed Bessemer City 72-56 in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.

The Cherokee Runners staged the 3rd annual Moccasin Run on Sunday, Feb. 23 with 19 runners completing the 10 miles from Straight Fork Bridge to the Acquoni Expo Center track.

The Lady Braves (22-3) were the runner-up in this past week’s Big Smoky Mountain Conference tournament following a tough 55-49 loss to Hayesville in the finals on Friday, Feb. 21.

The Cherokee Braves (15-10) were the runner-up in this past week’s Big Smoky Mountain Conference tournament held at Swain County High School. After defeating Andrews 51-45 in the semi-finals, the Braves ran into shooting issues in the finals against Robbinsville on Friday, Feb. 20 losing 66-52.
