Cherokee High School seniors Darius Thompson and Avery Mintz were named the Athletes of the Year at the annual Athletic Awards program held Friday, May 23 at the Chief Joyce Dugan Cultural Arts Center.

Cherokee High School held a signing ceremony for senior Tagan Crowe at the Charles George Arena on Wednesday, May 21. Crowe signed his letter of intent to continue his illustrious golf career as a Lion at the Mars Hill University.

The Lady Braves fell to the Maroon Devils 5-0 on Tuesday, May 13 at the Swain County High School softball field during the first round of the 1A state playoffs.

The Lady Braves just couldn’t get much offense going as they hosted East Wilkes in the first round of the 1A state playoffs on Wednesday, May 14. East Wilkes’ Melia Higgins put two in the back of the net as they defeated Cherokee 2-0.

Cherokee senior Stevi Sutton took second place in the girls shot put at the 1A State Track & Field Championship at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro on Friday, May 9 with a throw of 35-7.50. She placed just inches behind Samantha Welborn, Starmount, who threw 35-10.75.

EBCI tribal member Spencer McCoy, a junior at Swain County High School, won the White & Williams Co. Award for the top 1A/2A Male Athlete in an Olympic Sport at the 53rd Annual MAAC (Mountain Amateur Athletic Club) Awards Banquet.

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Well, it didn’t go away, but that didn’t stop almost 135 people, including 91 runners, who braved the pouring rain to participate in the annual Cherokee Choices Mother’s Day 5K on Saturday, May 10 at the Acquoni Expo Center.
