Cherokee community gathers to support Autism education and acceptance
April is both World Autism Month and National Autism Acceptance Month in the United States. The Jackson, Swain, Qualla Boundary Autism Support Group hosted the 2nd Annual Cherokee Autism Celebration in the Peaches Squirrell Sports & Recreation Complex in Cherokee, N.C. on the evening of Thursday, April 24.
EBCI joins in Accord Agreement with other USET founders
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) was one of four federally recognized tribes that founded what would become the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) – founded originally as the Inter-Tribal Council of United Southeastern Tribes.

A bill has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives in the 119th Congress that would grant federal acknowledgment to the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe of North Carolina, a state-recognized group.

The Museum of the Cherokee People (MotCP) and its board of directors have announced the creation of two crucial new roles within the organization.
Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launches Hinigoliya
Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launched a new reading program, Hinigoliya (you and I read), on Tuesday, March 5. Hinigoliya is a reading initiative to promote early literacy for children in kindergarten to third grade within the five-county service area (Graham, Cherokee, Swain, Jackson, Haywood).
Speakers’ Consortium holds quarterly meeting in Cherokee
The quarterly Cherokee Speakers’ Consortium meeting between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), the Cherokee Nation, and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) was held from Feb. 13-16 in Cherokee.

COMMENTARY: A lick and a promise
You and I, as tribal members, have given lip service to the development of a constitution for decades. The most recent effort was six years in the making. Outreach programs, advertising, community club learning sessions, websites, social media pages, and more were provided to the community over those six years.

Last summer, my wife visited Ireland and one of the main things that stuck out with me from her trip was the idea of “Tidy Towns”; an idea I feel would work great here in Cherokee.

Gadusi Bike Community opens doors to mountain biking
The Gadusi Bike Community was founded by Jones-Bowman Fellow Levi West in 2019. Each Jones-Bowman LAP fellow must complete a leadership goal as well as a cultural goal and have $4000 to accomplish these goals. As a leadership goal, West had a desire to share his love of mountain biking with the community for good reason.
WRESTLING: Two EBCI tribal members win state titles
Robbinsville’s Kyle Fink and Ben Wachacha, both members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), won individual wrestling state championships on Saturday, June 26.

WCU Wind Ensemble to present concert Oct. 28
The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the university’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Reel Big Fish, Ace Hood to present Homecoming concert at WCU
A concert featuring the ska-punk band Reel Big Fish and rapper Ace Hood will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at Western Carolina University’s Ramsey Regional Activity Center as part of festivities associated with WCU’s Homecoming weekend.
