The effects of the devastation that came to western North Carolina from Hurricane Helene has been widespread, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has been steadfast in helping its neighbors in the region.
Sparta man pleads guilty to killing a bald eagle
Robert Garner Gambill, 91, of Sparta, N.C., appeared in federal court in Charlotte on Friday, Oct. 11 and pleaded guilty to killing a bald eagle, in violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Tribal member wins awards for gardening, beekeeping
For Sharon Braswell-Zern and her husband, Leidy Zern, gardening and beekeeping are a way of life. Sharon, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, operates a farm with Leidy in Yancey County, N.C.
Scare-okee Committee continues to eye improvements.
The Scare-okee Committee met recently near the BIA Parking Lot and Oconaluftee Island Park to iron out additional details of the layout of this year’s “Trick or Treat Night in Scare-okee” event.
The Center for Native Health receives $30,000 Stewarding Native Lands Grant
The Center for Native Health recently received a $30,000.00 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the efforts of The Center for Native Health’s ᎢᏯ ih ya: EBCI Youth River Cane Project.

COMMENTARY: Let’s Talk
In second grade, in Mrs. Herbert’s class at Cherokee Elementary School, there was a day where I decided to write in detail everything that happened in class that day and report it to the class. I was a shy kid, but my classmates and teachers were very supportive and receptive of my report. I realized then that I liked reporting. I liked telling stories and sharing them with others, and others appreciated it as well.

COMMENTARY: It isn’t as easy as it looks: The view from the backseat.
Like many of you, somewhere in my being is the urge to be a backseat driver. I say like many of you, because I know from your comments on posts that we come from the same place sometimes.

Angel Gabrielle Jumper, age 35, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 23, 2024. She is the daughter of Glenn Jumper (Karen) and Gussyrobin Zepeda.

Willa Celeste Goodson, 13, of Bryson City, N.C., busted the gates of Heaven wide open Friday, March 15, 2024. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Ellen Koch Finger of Bryson City and the late Tony Goodson.
