EBCI Attorney General seeks removal of the constitution referendum question
On Thursday, April 20, the Constitution Committee of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) held its regular weekly meeting at the EOC building. In attendance were Lloyd Arneach Jr., chairperson of the committee, and Beloved Woman Carmaleta Monteith, who serves on the committee and is a representative of the Community Club Council (Yellowhill). Others in attendance were Ernest Tiger (vice chairperson of the Community Club Council), Virginia Johnson (Yellowhill Community Club representative), Judge Barbara “Sunshine” Parker, EBCI Attorney General Michael McConnell, Hannah Smith, Bonnie Claxton, Tammy Jackson, and Big Cove Tribal Council Rep. Teresa McCoy.
Cherokee celebrates Earth Week
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) celebrated Earth Week (April 17-22) with several events on and around the Qualla Boundary encouraging knowledge of environmental and wildlife issues.

COMMENTARY: What are we going to do?
As we conclude Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to talk about a subject that most folks are either repulsed by or don’t want to think about at all – the abusers, the perpetrators of domestic violence. After all, over this past month, we have talked about the heartache and physical pain these people inflict on others. Some of the stories of domestic violence are painful and horrifying.
COMMENTARY: Kids pay the price
We have been talking about domestic violence because this is the month set aside to place focus on the issue. We have discussed elder and spousal abuse. But those are not the only sufferers from this societal challenge.

Joseph “Joe” Thompson, 94, of the Big Cove Community, went to his Heavenly Home to join his Father on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Jackson and Alice Wolfe Thompson.

After a courageous battle with various illnesses, Jean J. Arch entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, March 26, 2022, from her home surrounded by family. Jean’s faith was the essence of her service to her community. She was given awards that described her outstanding service and tireless dedication to the Cherokee people and community.
