Justice and Interior Departments outline next steps to address MMIP and human trafficking crisis
The Departments of Justice and the Interior released their joint response on Tuesday, March 5 to the Not Invisible Act Commission’s recommendations on how to combat the missing or murdered Indigenous peoples (MMIP) and human trafficking crisis.
Qualla Boundary Civil Preparedness meeting held
The local Planning Committee Quarterly Meeting was held at the Shawn Blanton EOC Building on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The meeting was conducted by Mollie Grant, from EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Emergency Services, and Yona Wade, EBCI interim director of training and development.

Juanita Wilson, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), is one of five people selected statewide this year who were elected to membership in the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits (NCCNP).

Cherokee youth learning about raising chickens
The EBCI Cooperative Extension Office was full of smiles and the chirps of baby chickens ready to go to their new homes. It was distribution night for the Cherokee 4-H Youth Poultry Project as Sally Dixon and Benjamin Collette gave 10-12 chicks to each of the families in attendance at the event on the evening of Thursday, July 15.

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) has conducted a major ad campaign to generate support to have a delegate seated in the House of Representatives. Several native leaders across the country and legislators are supporting this action, accepting at face value what Cherokee Nation has said.

The Cherokee Braves 2017 varsity football team has been nominated for a WNC Sports Award which will be presented at the 57th Annual banquet to be held Sunday, May 6 at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville.
RUNNING: McCoy tackles BADWATER 50, earns buckle
Kallup McCoy, an EBCI tribal member, went to the beach recently and came back with a belt buckle. But, to earn that buckle he had to complete a 51.4 mile run most of which was on a wet beach.

The New England Foundation for the Arts’ Native Arts program has a Native artist-exchange, pairing Native artists from New England with artists from the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
Writers and Artists Wanted for Publication
Faolan Grady, an EBCI tribal member of the Yellowhill Community, is calling for short stories, poetry, essays, and artwork (including photography) submissions for a literary magazine that he will assemble for publication at Warren Wilson College.
Area Band wins “Last Band Standing” contest
Area band Big House Radio recently won the Last Band Standing Contest sponsored by WNC Magazine and the Orange Peel.
