DOI Officials to talk with Tribal Leaders re: Cobell Settlement
A federal judge, in response to a motion on behalf of the Department of the Interior, has granted permission for Interior officials to begin communicating with class members on land trust consolidation provisions of the Cobell Settlement agreement.
Original Flour Corn Seeds returned to the Tribe
Eva Welch, age 5, accepted three gallons of a rare, pure line of Cherokee white flour corn seed from seed-saver Keith Nicholson on Saturday, May 28. Eva returned the seeds to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians through her father, Kevin Welch, who heads up the Tribe’s seed bank and the Center for Cherokee Plants.
Park Managers to close Elkmont Entrance Nightly for Firefly Viewing
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials have announced that the Elkmont entrance road will be closed to motor vehicles and pedestrian use every night from 5:00 p.m. until midnight, June 4-12, except to registered campers staying at the Elkmont Campground.

Cherokee hosts Memorial Day Ceremony
Fallen warriors were honored during a special ceremony held on Memorial Day at the Yellowhill Veterans Memorial Park in Cherokee. Hosted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143, the event had the theme of “Honoring our Fallen Heroes”.
CHS Class of 2011 graduates
“Together, we have experienced life, separately we will pursue our dreams and forever our memories will remain,” states the class motto of Cherokee High School’s Class of 2011. A total of seventy-two members of the class graduated in the arena at Cherokee Central Schools on Friday, May 27.
