Basket stolen

This basket was stolen on Monday, Aug. 8. It was made by Chelsea Murphy last year at Cherokee High School with the help of Lucille Lossiah and Alyne Stamper.

Tribe breaks ground on new Justice Center

It has been said for years that Cherokee needs a jail. That reality is one step closer as ground was broken on Monday, Aug. 8 for the Cherokee Justice Center which will be located on a 14-acre tract off of Oliver Smith Road in the Yellowhill Community.

New approach launched to reduce tribal alcohol and substance abuse problems

A new federal framework to assist American Indian and Alaska Native communities in achieving their goals in the prevention, intervention, and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse was announced Friday, Aug. 5 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Department of Interior (DOI) Secretary Ken Salazar, and Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder.

Grant awarded to five N.C. State Recognized Tribes

A N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs program that provides workforce development services to American Indian citizens, communities and businesses in five tribal communities in North Carolina has received a $274,534 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to continue services throughout FY2011-12.
