THE ROAD IS OPEN!
Newfound Gap Road (US 441) through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) is now officially open. The road, closed by a landslide that occurred in January, was opened on the morning of Monday, April 15 – just 90 days after 90,000 cubic yards of dirt and rock slid off the hill during the slide.
Cherokee County Casino approved
Cherokee County should soon see a much-needed economic boost to their area. Tribal Council voted 11-1 to build a casino on a tract of trust land in the county which has one of the highest unemployment rates (13.5 percent as of Feb. 2013) in the state.
