The EBCI Public Safety Communications Center received a report of a body floating in the Oconaluftee River on Saturday, May 23 at 11:07am.

The EBCI Public Safety Communication Center received a report at 10:05pm on Thursday, May 21 of a male subject having been shot in the head.

It’s been over a year since Tribal Council passed a resolution (No. 182 – 2014) authorizing a draft to be crafted for a Section 17 corporate charter for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The main goal, per Res. No. 182, “is seeking economic diversification” that will benefit the Tribe into the future.

Diesel fuel leaked into the Oconaluftee River from the Cherokee Mini-Mart underground storage tanks over a month ago. The leak occurred on April 2 and was discovered a day later.
