The Qualla Boundary Historical Society will gather for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6:30pm at the Qualla Boundary Library. Lamar Marshall, research director of Southeast Heritage, will discuss his work on an online, educational GIS Story Map series funded by the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.
The series is derived from a collection of digitized archives, including historical maps, surveys, Cherokee genealogical records, and early journals. Subjects include genealogy, maps of Cherokee towns and trails, and historical events leading to the establishment of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina. Interactive maps are associated with each Story Map page, which will be accessible on iPads, iPhones, and related devices.
The series will invite the public to visit Cherokee to experience the living history of the reconstructed Oconaluftee Indian Village, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Qualla Arts and Crafts, and other authentic representatives of cultural heritage. The project is in partnership with the EBCI GIS Department and hosted on the EBCI GIS website.
