CASHIERS – The Cherokee Lady Braves (1-0) opened their 2014-15 season and their quest for a fifth straight sectional championship in style – with a huge road victory. With 28 and 23 points respectively, Cherokee’s Kendall Toineeta and LeLe Lossiah both outscored the Blue Ridge Lady Bobcats as the Lady Braves got a huge 78-19 win on Friday, Dec. 5.
“It’s just great to get out there and play,” said Lady Braves head coach Chris Mintz. “We haven’t played in a long time. We started out slow, and then all of a sudden we cranked it up. We just kept up the intensity the entire time, and they couldn’t match it.”
The game started relatively evenly, and Cherokee only led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. But, the second quarter was a completely different story. The Lady Braves’ stifling defense held Blue Ridge to only one point in the second, and Cherokee took a commanding 50-13 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter was a little more even with Cherokee outscoring them 9-6, but then the Lady Braves put it away for good with a 19-0 fourth quarter.
Other Lady Braves scorers included: Macie Welch 2, Bree Stamper 6, Shelby Wolfe 2, Sarai McMillan 3, Tiffany Riggen 2, and Timiyah Brown 12.
Blue Ridge scorers were: Diane Ramirez 4, Anna Stewart 4, Savannah Heltsley 4, Kaylee O’Dwyer 3, and Ashlee O’Dwyer 4.
