PINEHURST – The Lady Braves Golf team made school history at Cherokee High School by sending two members to the NCHSAA State Finals on Oct. 27 and 28. The 36-hole tournament was held on the 5,703 yard, par-72 Red Fox (West) Course at the Firefox Resort and Golf Club in Pinehurst.
Cherokee’s Bree Stamper competes at the 1A/2A State Golf Championship in Pinehurst on Monday, Oct. 27. She finished 47th overall with a total score of 220.
Seventy-eight golfers, out of a field of over 1,200 ladies from across the state, qualified for the opportunity to play in the two-day 1A/2A tournament. Cherokee’s Bree Stamper and Peri Wildcatt were among those who qualified.
“Bree and Peri had excellent play on both days with the exception of one or two holes, which killed their overall scores,” said Coach Sharon Bradley. The course was beautiful with wide open fairways and challenging greens. We had a great following of parents, family and friends. We would like to thank Principal Chief Michelle Hicks for dinner on Monday!”
Stamper finished 47th overall by shooting a 111 in the first round and a 109 in the second for a total score of 220. Wildcatt finished tied for 61st by shooting a 112 in the first round and a 121 in the second for a total score of 233.
Grace Yatawara, from Salisbury High School, finished in first place in the two-day tournament one-stroke over par with a 145.
“We were not quite ready for the physical challenge of playing two back-to-back 18-hole matches and a practice round in three days, but it has been a great season for the Lady Braves,” said Coach Bradley. “The team will be returning nine of the 11 players from this year. We are extremely proud of our ladies this year, the first ever girls (team) to make it to state competition and we are ready to start planning for next year.”
