BRYSON CITY – Duke Energy completed construction on the new Bryson Tailrace Access Area and Canoe Portage site located at the Bryson Hydroelectric Project on the Oconaluftee River in Swain County recently. The access area is free for public use and will be maintained by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission through a cooperative partnership with Duke Energy.

“This improvement is an example of the cooperative partnership between Duke Energy and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to ensure quality public access areas are available for recreation and fishing,” said John Crutchfield, director of Duke Energy’s public safety and recreation strategy planning services.

The amenities at the Bryson Tailrace Access Area include an area suitable for launching canoes and kayaks. Visitors can also utilize a portage trail from the launch site to a canoe and kayak take-out site at Lake Ela. The site features an accessible fishing pier, accessible parking and informational signage. The site is located at 310 Dam Road in Whittier, North Carolina.
