CHEROKEE RUNNERS
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Robin and Stephan Swimmer attended the 55th annual Roadrunners Club of America Conference in Albuquerque. While there, they met runners from across the country and attended educational sessions with regard to risk management and how to keep integrity in local races. Before heading home, they also competed in the 10K race that was held on Sunday, May 5. The Cherokee Runners have been members in the RRCA for over two years and this is the first conference that group members have attended.
In other running news, four Cherokee Runners competed in the 2013 Diva’s Half Marathon in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina that took place on April 28. Robin Swimmer, Angel and Priscilla Squirrell and Dawna Paul all participated in the event. Elnora Thompson has competed in several local races as well as volunteering for events such as the annual Ramble Run in Asheville. Cherokee Runners also competed in the Cherokee Choices Mother’s Day 5K as well as volunteering time for the event. The group’s 2013 Couch to 5K program will begin its fifth week and attendance is very good. Thirty-five people signed up for the Couch to 5K program and each week at least 20 to 25 new runners are attending.
Community members are encouraged to join the Cherokee Runners. There are no fitness qualifications to join – just a willingness to improve fitness through running or walking. Meetings are held monthly on the second Tuesday at 5pm at Age Link Conference Room. Visit the Cherokee Runners Facebook page or its website: www.cherokeerunners.com.
