The Mother’s Day 5K was a great success. We had over 200 participants. Big Y won the Community Award with the most participants with 35, Birdtown came in second with 27 and Wolfetown came in third with 26. We had over 60 out-of-towners coming in to participate. There were 102 runners, and overall there were 126 female and 69 male participants. Fifty-seven of those participants were children under the age of 12 and 38 were over the age of 50. Our oldest participant was 79 years old. Our group competition was won by the Antioch Church with the Robbinsville Road Runners coming in second.
Cherokee Choices staff Tara McCoy stated, “It is great to see a large turnout to support a great cause, especially seeing so many young kids running. Also, I am pleased to see the Antioch Church come out and make a statement with a team to support their fellow church member Sam Otter. I think it is great for the churches to get involved for fellowship, exercise and outreach.”
We would like to thank everyone that donated items to the Silent Auction. We received many wonderful items from: River’s Edge Outfitters, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Resort, The EBCI Division of Commerce, Cherokee Historical Association, Nell Crowe, Hollifield Jewelers, Cherokee Subway, Sharon McCoy, Newfound Lodge Restaurant, Talking Leaves Bookstore, Tonya Carroll, Kenneth Smith, Mulligan’s Sports Bar and Grill, Tara McCoy, Zena Wolfe, Cherokee Food Lion, Butch and Louise Goings, Middleton’s Pawn Shop, Cherokee Diabetes Program, Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual Inc., The Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Denny Crowe, Peter’s Pancake, Sassy Sunflowers, and Jackson’s General Store.
We would also like to thank everyone that bid on items because all of the proceeds will benefit Seven Clans Dialysis Center patients. We would like to send a big thank you to Crowe’s Snow To Go (Pee Wee, Mickie, Bo, Dick and Ellen Crowe) for setting up and donating their profits from shaved ice sales to the dialysis center and patients as well. Another huge thanks goes to Warren Dupree and the rest of the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143 for presenting the colors and Sam Otter for his opening prayer and work toward the success of the silent auction. Last, but not least, we would like to thank all of the runners, walkers, volunteers and Cherokee Choices staff for helping make this event possible.
There will be a luncheon for the volunteers and those who donated items to the silent auction on Thursday May 30 at 11:30 am at Cherokee Choices.
