Most teenagers are out on a Saturday night, watching movies, hanging out with their friends, looking for something to do, but for a group of Cherokee High School seniors, they boarded a Cherokee Boys Club charter bus on Saturday, April 17 at 10pm to travel to New York City for their senior trip.
The itinerary included visits to Rockefeller Center, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square, and Central Park (including Strawberry Fields). They watched a Mets game and a Broadway show (“The Lion King” at Minskoff Theatre). Of course the favored activity of the week was SHOPPING!
The students enjoyed the trip but were amazed at how much people walk in NYC, but after sitting in traffic every day just to get through the Lincoln tunnel, it all made sense!
Some student comments included:
“You can stand in one spot for just a few minutes and hear people speaking several different languages.”
“I loved Central Park. I was surprised there was such a pretty and peaceful place in New York.”
“I didn’t want to leave.”
“I think I could live here.”
“I can’t wait to get back to the mountains.”
“Gosh, there’s always some smell, good and bad.”
“I didn’t realize how much I would like it.”
The Class of 2010 related, “We would like to thank everyone who helped us as we raised money and prepared for the trip. Thanks to the CHS Booster Club for the Braves bag, to senior Alisha Long for donating a basket (made with her grandmother Lillian Crowe), and to Cherokee by Design for donating a clock for raffle fundraisers. Congratulations to Charlene Owle for winning the Alisha Long/Lillian Crowe basket and to David Cozzo for winning the Cherokee by Design clock.”
They continued, “To everyone who purchased doughnuts, oranges, pizzas, and raffle tickets, we thank you. We especially want to thank our principal, Jason Ormbsy, for your support and for the cookout before we left Cherokee. Thanks to Ray Kinsland and the boys club; you don’t even know how much you mean to us. “
