Ashley Sessions – Birdtown Tribal Council candidate

SIYO – My name is Ashley Sessions, I am a lifelong resident of the Birdtown community where I live with my fiancé and our four children. I am currently a student at HCC where I will receive a degree in criminal justice, specializing in forensic science. I am currently working in our local Indian Village alongside one of our elders of the community as a crafter, making pottery. While working in the Village I have been learning more about our culture and history. I would like to give you some insight on my platform as I seek a seat as a council representative.

Housing – Our Tribe is in desperate need of emergency housing! There are so many families without homes at the moment and because of this, housing would be my top priority if elected. Every family deserves a home.

Recovery programs – We currently have a recovery center under construction in the Snowbird community. What I would like to work toward is adding transitional housing and job opportunities to this program. I commend all of the individuals who are brave enough to fight their addictions and enter our recovery programs. It is our job to assist them in this recovery and make sure they all get a second chance at life.

Economic Development – Restaurants, shopping centers, and family friendly activities are something our communities and tribe would greatly benefit from. We must become more diversified and have more revenue coming in besides our casinos. By adding more to the area, we are not only bringing in more revenue, we are also providing more for our people. Due to the current events our tribe and leadership are facing, I feel I must add these next two topics to my platform.

Transparency – I believe everyone in the community deserves to know what their Chief, Vice Chief, and Council members are doing. Monthly reports from all elected officials would be essential in keeping transparency. No more closed or illegal meetings.

Accountability – Elected officials are held to a higher ethical standard and must be held accountable for their actions. One of my main goals will be to have an ethics committee in place to make this possible.

In closing, I would like to humbly ask for your support by voting for me, Ashley Sessions, for your next Birdtown Council representative! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time. 736-8861. Thank you.
