GLENVILLE – Cherokee’s varsity basketball teams traveled to Blue Ridge in Glenville on Friday, Jan. 24 and came away with two wins. The Braves (8-9) won 67-47, and the Lady Braves (15-2) won big 77-31.
Lady Braves 77 Blue Ridge 31
Cherokee dominated the first half of this game taking a commanding 32-4 lead after the first period and leading 49-8 at the half. They would outscore Blue Ridge 28-23 in the second half to win by 46.
Kendall Toineeta led the way for Cherokee with 18pts followed by Avery Mintz with 14. Overall, the Lady Braves shot 36 percent from the field. Cherokee beat Blue Ridge on the boards for sure out-rebounding them 48 to 25.
The Lady Braves played great defense as well having 23 steals including 7 from Mintz and 5 from Toineeta who is currently second in western North Carolina with 5.3/gm.
Other Lady Braves scorers included: Kendra Panther 2, Le Le Lossiah 6, Bree Stamper 12, Miranda Smith 5, Brionna Jumper 6, Kayla Pheasant 2, Peri Wildcatt 10, Taran Swimmer 1, and Kylee Wiggins 1.
Blue Ridge scorers included: #3 (no name given) 5, Anna Stewart 5, Savannah Heltsley 2, and #22 (no name given) 19.
Braves 67 Blue Ridge 47
Cherokee narrowly shot better from the field in this game (36 to 35 percent) than Blue Ridge, but they had nine less turnovers and 14 steals.
Dustin Johnson and Jason McMillan led the Braves with 18 each. McMillan shot 64 percent from the field including two three-pointers.
Other Braves scorers included: Brandt Sutton 6, Kennan Panther 1, Darius Thompson 14, Jesse Toineeta 6, Chris Queen 2, and Silas Reed-Littlejohn 2.
