Valarie Davis Ferguson – obituary

     Valarie Davis Ferguson, age 97, of Old Mission Road, Whittier, NC died Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Harris Regional Hospital of Sylva, NC. Ms. Ferguson was born October 26, 1913 in Haywood County . She is the daughter of the late Vinson and the late Ethel (James) Davis. She was married to the late Fred Ferguson. 

     She was a resident of Jackson County since 1939. She was employed as a desk clerk at Newfound Lodge Motel. In later years she loved gardening and traveling. She spent her life as a homemaker and mother. She was the oldest member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She helped with fund raising for C. J. Harris Hospital, leading the fund raising drive in Qualla Community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Ferguson.

     She is survived by four sons, Ray, David, Donald (Hoppy) and Freddie Ferguson, all of Whittier; one daughter Vivadean Kinsland, also of Whittier; one brother Bill Davis of Clyde; three sisters, Lucille Brooks of Candler, Margaret Tompkins of Clyde, and Hilda Wynn of Hershey, PA; ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

     The funeral was held 2:00 pm on Friday, March 18 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, Whittier, with Reverend Steve Jamison officiating.  Burial was in the Sherrill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, PO Box 50 Memphis, TN 38101.
