Marion Dillard Cucumber, 55 of Cherokee passed away Friday August 13, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is the son of Everette “Ed” Cucumber and the late Letha Saunooke Cucumber.
A 1973 graduate of Sylva Webster High School, he was an honor student as well as an outstanding athlete, having played on the 1972 State AA championship football AA team. He also played and participated on other teams that won numerous conference championships.
Marion graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1978 with a BA in Linguistics, having been able to speak 7 languages of which 5 were spoken fluently. He had also obtained a BA in Political Science.
Marion was an accomplished musician and craftsman and he will be missed by all that knew him.
He was also preceded in death by sister Florence Gail Cucumber; maternal grandparents Ammoneeta Saunooke and Nancy Tooni Saunooke, paternal grandparents James and Elizabeth Reed Cucumber and a niece Casey Bradley.
He is also survived by Raymond Cucumber of Asheville, NC, Melvin B. (Fuzz) Cucumber of Cherokee, NC. Two special nieces Cayla “Boss” Cucumber and Erica “Moose” Bradley and two special nephews James Cucumber and Traelin Carey; also numerous Aunts and Uncles and Cousins.
A wake will be held at the Piney Grove Baptist Church starting at 4PM Sunday August 15, 2010, till the hour of service at 2:00PM Monday August 16, 2010. The Reverends James “Bo” Parris, James “Red” Bradley and John Cucumber will preside over the services.
Service will conclude at the Cucumber Family Cemetery.
