The Cherokee Braves and Lady Braves swept rival Swain at home on Tuesday, Feb. 2 on “Pink Zone Night” which helped raise awareness about breast cancer. The Braves (5-12) defeated Swain 69-56 and the Lady Braves (15-3) won by twenty points 65-45.
Tre Owle again led the Braves with 21 points and 4 assists followed by Tsaladi Sequoyah with 15 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Other Braves scorers included: Tyler Williams 10 (4 steals), J.T. Wildcat 7 (5 rebounds), A.J. Crowe 6, and Greg Bradley 10 (4 steals).
Tahnee Arkansas led the Lady Braves’ attack with 15 points followed by Tashina Martin with 11 points. Other Lady Braves scorers included: Rayna Davis 9 (5 rebounds), Kayla Smith 2 (5 rebounds), Paige Jackson 9 (12 rebounds), Elizabeth Wahnetah 2, Jordyn Thompson 5, Alexis Maney 6, and Celine Lambert 4.
The Pink Zone Night was sponsored by the Cherokee Booster Club. Information from the Club stated, “In years past, the Cherokee High School Lady Braves basketball team attended the Kay Yow Basketball Camp in Raleigh, NC. During this time, they became very familiar with her long struggle with breast cancer. In 2008, the Women’s College Basketball Association created the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in honor of Coach Yow.”
Funds raised on Tuesday will go towards the Cherokee Cancer Support Group along with a donation to the Kay Yow Fund.
Prior to the varsity games, both of Cherokee’s JV teams lost to Swain. The JV girls lost 43-33, and the JV boys lost 71-44.
