Cherokee Musical Theatre to present “Sister Act”
The comedic antics of Deloris Van Cartier will come to life this spring in the Chief Joyce Dugan Cultural Arts Center as the Cherokee Central Schools Musical Theatre program presents “Sister Act”. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort opens Cherokee Outdoors shop
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort has announced a new addition to the resort’s retail collection, Cherokee Outdoors, an outdoor-focused specialty shop. The new retail store opened its doors on April 1 and offers hotel guests and visitors a variety of outdoor-focused apparel and gear from distinguished and sustainable brands.
Tribal member named a Kentucky Colonel
Robert C. Parker, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been given the highest honor from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Gov. Andy Beshears recently commissioned Parker as a Kentucky Colonel.
Learning lessons from the clay; Gadugi Pottery Exhibit opens at Museum
The artistry and beauty of Cherokee pottery was on display at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian as the Gadugi Pottery Exhibit opened on the evening of Friday, April 14. The exhibit featured the works of students from a Community Learning Workshop, hosted by the Museum, which was taught by Tara McCoy, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and noted potter.
2023 Community-Wide Reading Challenge winners
In recognition of National Reading Month (March), the Community Development Division of the EBCI Cooperative Extension Center hosted their Annual Community-Wide Reading Challenge March 1-31.
Tribal member appointed to head University of Miami Supreme Court
Dallas J. Bennett, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been appointed to the top position in the University of Miami (UM) Student Government Supreme Court. A junior majoring in history with a minor in political science, he has been appointed as the university’s Student Government Supreme Court Chief Justice – a position never before held by an EBCI tribal member.
Celebrating 35 years of service of Deb West
On Thursday, March 30, it was business as usual at the Cherokee Senior Citizens program. Clients began arriving as early as 10 a.m. for activities and lunch. On that day, like every day, announcements began around 11:15 a.m. But Thursday was a little different. Unbeknownst to the staff who were asked to gather in the dining room, a special announcement was being made.
