Cherokee Indian Police Department officers were dispatched to the intersection of Hwy. 19 and Jess Littlejohn Road on Thursday, Aug. 3 at approximately 7:20am. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male, later identified as Melvin Esmal Herndon, 86, of Eutaw, Ala.
After the initial investigation, it was concluded that Herndon succumbed to injuries sustained from an apparent hit-and-run. After speaking with witnesses, CIPD officials noted they believe the incident occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 3 between 12:45-1am.
