Runners from across the country are ready again for the Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon & 5K on Saturday, Oct. 31. The race was originally scheduled for Oct. 3, but was rescheduled when torrential rains hit the region that weekend.
The event will be held in the parking lot of the Acquoni Events Center and will include courses take runners through the heart of Cherokee, including a section on the half marathon course that incorporates a section of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, where elk can be seen.
Some roads in Cherokee will be closed for the race on Saturday morning, including: all of Acquoni Road between US 19 and Big Cove Road; the outside lanes of US 19 from US 441 to Whitewater Drive and all of Whitewater Drive. Drivers are asked to use extreme caution throughout the race course and to follow the instructions of public safety at all times.
The event is known for not only it’s amazing beauty in the heart of the fall foliage season but the swag package given to all race participants. This year’s package includes a race shirt, fleece vest, and fleece headband. Each participant also receives a slate finisher award and two action photos. There is a $1,600 cash purse for the half marathon.
After the race, runners are treated to a post-race feast created and served by the culinary team at Harrah’s Cherokee Resort. This year’s menu includes Vegetarian Chili; Shredded Beef Tamales, Fruit Protein Smoothie Station with Berry, Banana, Spinach and Greek Yogurt; Granola with Cranberries, Cherries, Raisin, Walnuts and Almonds; Fresh Fruit; Chocolate Milk; and Cherokee Bottled Water.
