The following was submitted by Travis Smith, Manager of the Club’s Construction and Facilities Department as part of the Club’s 2011 Annual Report. Information contained in the report is for the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.
Construction and Facilities Department Annual Report
The Construction and Facilities Department employs 14 staff that includes some of the best carpenters, a mason, a plumber, an electrician, heavy equipment operators and truck drivers. These employees are responsible for maintenance and new construction for the Cherokee Boys Club and Tribal HIP program. In April of 2011, the Boys Club hired Travis Smith as the new manager for this department. Since that time, long-time employee Charles Arch was named Assistant Manager. The department is broken down into three sub-departments: General Construction, Tribal HIP and Infrastructure.
The C&F General Construction division is responsible for maintenance on all of the Cherokee Boys Club buildings and properties. Facilities provide services to the Cherokee Central Schools, Southwestern Community College, Tribal Juvenile Services, Tribal Audit, Tribal Housing, Child Support Enforcement and any other Boys Club or Tribal need.
The Tribal Housing Improvement Program (HIP) has been administered by the Cherokee Boys Club’s Construction and Facilities Department for several years. The HIP program provides housing for qualified elderly and/or disabled enrolled members of the Tribe on Tribal lands. This year the Construction and Facilities Department completed 10 new homes with five more under construction. These homes are funded by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
C&F Infrastructure Department has combined this year with the Club’s Hauling Department. This department is responsible for all new site development for the HIP Department. This includes all site prep, roads, foundations, gutters and final grading. All of these functions are provided through the Tribal Housing Infrastructure Department. The Club also provides support and assistance to Tribal programs and residents on the Boundary with heavy truck hauling needs.
Travis Smith and his staff in the Boys Club’s Construction and Facilities Department would like to thank the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ HIP Committee for their continued support. Without this support the Club would not be able to provide the employment opportunities to provide services for the members of our Tribe and community.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNTIES
The Club’s Construction and Facilities Department has an opening for a Lead Mason and for a Carpenter’s/Electrician’s Helper. See the Employment Section in this issue of the Cherokee One Feather for details.
