The board of advisors of the Eastern Band of Cherokees Community Foundation announces the 2013 award from its community grantmaking fund, according to Ellison Rudd, outgoing board vice-president.
This year’s recipient was the Cherokee Indian Hospital. The hospital will implement a colonoscopy project to improve the return of colonoscopy screening cards to the hospital, thereby identifying positive screenings and providing early intervention. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of mortality. The cumulative lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer for both men and women in the USA is 6 percent. It affects approximately 1 million people worldwide. Risk factors of colorectal cancer: alcohol, family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, industrialized countries, low fiber diet, obesity, old age, smoking, syndromic colon cancer.
Ellison thanked the community for support of the Eastern Band of Cherokees Community Foundation. “The grants we are able to make from this fund are important to our community and our quality of life,” he said. “Critical programs would not be possible without the generosity of many individuals and organizations that have supported our grantmaking fund.”
