The United Tribes of North Carolina has announced it will hold a writing competition and a storytelling competition at the 38th Annual NC Indian Unity Conference scheduled for Feb. 28 – March 2 at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.
The conference theme is “Planting the Future from our Traditional Roots thru Healthy Eating”.
The writing competition is open to all ages, and the areas of writing included are: rhyming poetry, non-rhyming poetry, inspirational/spiritual writing, genre short story, romance/mystery, mainstream/current issues, literary short story, memoirs, and life changing events.
Writing competition guidelines include:
- Must be a member of a federally or state recognized American Indian tribe and currently reside in North Carolina.
- Only original unpublished writings will be accepted.
- Entries are limited to three pieces per writer.
- Name of writing, author’s name, number of words, age group and category must appear on top right hand corner. If this does not appear, works will be disqualified.
- Complete registration forms must accompany each writing entry.
- Typed, double-spaced, front page only on 8.5” x 11” paper, with multiple pages stapled. Page numbers on right hand bottom corner. No email entries will be accepted.
- Do not resubmit entries from previous years.
- Entries must be turned in to the Registration Desk or to one of the writing coordinators on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 10am – 2pm.
- Entries may be mailed to Nora Dial-Stanley, 1049 Megan Cross Lane, Kernersville, NC 27284, but must arrive no later than Monday, Feb. 25.
- No late entries will be accepted.
- Winners will be announced during the General Assembly/Breakfast on Saturday, March 2.
- All submitted entries may be published in future Unity Conference program books or United Tribes publications.
There will be a cash prize given for winners in each category of the writing competition.

Storytelling competition guidelines include:
- Must be 16 years or older.
- Must be a member of a federally or state recognized American Indian tribe and currently residing in North Carolina.
- Stories must be within four to six minutes. Ones longer than six minutes may result in a disqualification.
- Props must be appropriate to the story and approved by the coordinator.
- Application must be turned in at the Registration Desk no later than Thursday, Feb. 28 from 10am – 2pm. - Judging will take place during the Storytelling Workshop. Date and time to be determined
- The winner will be announced and/or tell their story during the General Assembly/Breakfast on Saturday, March 2.
