Native Americans compete in Olympics

Four Native American athletes competed in the XXX Olympic Summer Games in London, England.  Three represented the United States and one hailed from Canada.

As part of the U.S. Women’s Water Polo team, Native Hawaiian Anae Tumua won gold as the U.S. beat Spain 8-5 in the final on Thursday, Aug. 9.  This marks the first time the U.S. Women’s team has won gold in the sport.

Adrienne Lyle, Cherokee Nation citizen, placed 35th in the Individual Dressage Equestrian competition.  Atop Wizard, she scored a total of 83.663 during the event held Aug. 2-3.  The gold medal was won by Charlotte Dujardin, Great Britain, with a score of 83.663.

Mary Killman, Citizen Potowatomi Nation, placed 11th in the Synchronized Swimming duet competition on Tuesday, Aug. 7.  Along with her partner Mariya Koroleva, they scored a total of 87.770.  The gold medal was won by the Russian pair of Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina with a score of 98.900.

Mary Spencer, a First Nations Ojibwe, represented Team Canada in the women’s middleweight (75kg, 165lb.) boxing competition.  After receiving a bye in the round of 16, she lost 17-14 to China’s LI Jinzi in the quarterfinals held on Monday, Aug. 6.
