CULLOWHEE – A one-day intensive course in the Cherokee language will be offered Thursday, June 14, by Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing Education.
The course will be held from 9am – 4pm in Room 143 of the Cordelia Camp Building.
Two Cherokee language scholars, Tom Belt, WCU visiting instructor of Cherokee, and Hartwell Francis, director of the university’s Cherokee language program, will introduce the Cherokee syllabary, provide tools for learning it and review Cherokee syllabary literature. Students will move on to engaging in brief conversations in Cherokee.
Participants will be provided with Cherokee language sound files on CD for review and further study, a syllabary chart and reference sheets.
“Understanding verb stems is the key to learning the Cherokee language,” said Francis. “We’ll help participants become more familiar with this and also give them access to an extensive Cherokee language website where we post our work. This will allow them to continue their study after the course concludes.”
The course fee is $59 for those who register by Monday, June 11, and $79 thereafter. A lunch will be provided.
