Learn to make traditional crafts in workshops at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in February. You can learn to make traditional Cherokee stamped pottery Saturday, Feb. 12 with Bernadine George from 10 am to 4 pm. Cost is $50 plus a $5 materials fee. Bernadine George is a founding member of the Cherokee Potters Guild and has shown her work at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C., for the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and throughout the Southeast. She will be teaching the traditional stamped Cherokee pottery that dates back more than 3,000 years in the southern Appalachians.
Ramona Lossie is a master basket maker who has shown her work at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and throughout the country. She will be teaching how to make a white oak basket, using plain and dyed splints. These are included in the cost of materials. Both George and Lossie are EBCI tribal members.
The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is located on US Hwy 441 and Drama Rd. Classes will be held on the Art Studio of the Ken Blankenship Education and Research Center. Discounts are available for members of the museum and for enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
