Both of Cherokee’s varsity basketball teams cruised to wins over Blue Ridge on Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Lady Braves (16-2) won 65-37 and the Braves (9-7) won 80-54.
Avery Mintz and Kendall Toineeta led the Lady Braves with 14pts each. Cherokee jumped out early in this one leading 20-6 after the first period and 48-14 at the half. Blue Ridge scored 17 in the final period, but it was too little as the Lady Braves took the win by 28pts.
Other Lady Braves scorers included: Jordyn Thompson 10, Bree Stamper 3, Le Le Lossiah 4, Alexis Maney 12, Miranda Smith 1, Deija Burgess 2 and Brianna Jumper 5.
Darby Hickman led Blue Ridge with 15pts. Other Blue Ridge scorers included: Samantha Zamick 2, Venus Ramirez 2, Diane Ramirez 8, Kaylee O’Dwyer 8 and Natasha Bumgarner 2.
Seth Littlejohn led the Braves with 17pts followed by Jesse Toineeta with 15. This game started out closer than the girls with Cherokee actually trailing by one (16-15) after the first period. They came back some in the second and took a three point lead (33-30) into the locker room.
The second half was different. Cherokee poured it on in the third period outscoring Blue Ridge 24-9. They kept the momentum going in the final period scoring another 23 points to take the 26 point win.
Other Braves scorers included: Brandt Sutton 3, Raven Frankiewicz 12, Kennan Panther 2, Stephen Swan 2, Hunter Lambert 4, Derrick Ledford 6, Chris Queen 3, Silas Reed-Littlejohn 4 and Eli Littlejohn 12.
Blue Ridge was led by Brian Thommes with 22pts. Other Blue Ridge scorers included: Craig Ezechel 6, Dale Riddle 10, Hunter Stewart 8, Daniel Hickman 4 and Spencer Ferlita 4.
