Something brand new is coming to Cherokee Elementary School.
Fourth and fifth graders will soon have the opportunity to be a part of the National Elementary Honor Society starting in January 2013. The purpose of this organization is to promote and recognize scholarship and leadership in our school. The group plans to meet each month during the school day in order to work on service projects for our school and the community.
In order to be considered for membership in the Cherokee Elementary Honor Society, students must be in the fourth or fifth grade and have an average grade percentile of 90 percent or above in academic subjects for two consecutive nine week periods. For instance, if a student earns an 85 percent in academic subjects the first nine weeks and 95 percent average the second nine weeks then he or she will be eligible for membership because the average of the two consecutive nine week grades is 90 percent. Students are expected to maintain the standard by which they were selected. If a student’s average falls below 90 percent, he or she will be removed from active status and be given an agreed upon time to improve the grade.
The first induction ceremony is planned for February for all qualified fourth and fifth grade students.
“We are very excited about this new endeavor and hope you will encourage your child to always do their best,” Cherokee Central Schools officials related, “We are looking forward to working with this promising group of students.”
