RezHOPE holds Gadugi House ribbon cutting ceremony
RezHOPE held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Gadugi House, a men’s transitional living home in Tsisqwohi (Birdtown), on the morning of Friday, March 22. RezHOPE is a Cherokee-based non-profit organization that supports people in recovery from substance use disorders.
Planning Board discusses Agricultural/Recreational multi-use facility
On the morning of March 18, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Planning Board met in the Tribal Council chambers to provide project updates. A major project of discussion was an agricultural center on the old Cherokee High School grounds that could also be used as a recreational sports facility.

Little Free Library dedicated and funded at Dora Reed Children’s Center
CHEROKEE, N.C. – Tuesday, Jan. 24 marked the dedication ceremony for the now-named Vonne and Shih-Rong Little Free Library located at the Dora Reed Children’s Center.

Birdtown Gym to be re-named honoring Peaches Squirrell
The Birdtown Gym has been re-named for a person synonymous with basketball in the Cherokee community. The building will now be known as the Peaches Squirrell Sports and Recreation Complex.

COMMENTARY: I got chills, they’re multiplying!
The month of October is bookended with two exceptionally fun and exciting events. The signature event for the tribe is the Cherokee Indian Fair which runs Oct. 3-7, although the initial information from the Fair committee is that there will be a “Fair Week Stick Off”, meaning as part of the start of the Fair, stickball games will be held at Unity Field on Monday, Oct. 2. So, bonus!
COMMENTARY: Hey Facebook, quit deleting photos of Natives
Last evening, I uploaded a photo I took of men of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) playing stickball during the Annual Kituwah Celebration in June. That photo was almost immediately deleted by Facebook stating it went against their community standards on “nudity or sexual activity”.

BASEBALL: Braves take win over Eagles in bottom of seventh
Cherokee Braves fans got a treat as Daniel Thompson crossed the plate to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give them a 5-4 win over the Hiwassee Dam Eagles at home on the afternoon of Friday, May 7.

A four school meet was held at Cherokee High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 5 with Cherokee, Swain Co., Andrews, and Rosman high schools participating.
‘Make weight, make state’: Cherokee wrestlers are gunning for state tournament
After having several wrestlers qualify for the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament last season, this year’s Cherokee High School (CHS) varsity team is looking to bring home some hardware this year.

Helen Biddix Parker, 85, of Sylva, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023. A native and a lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Newt and Margaret Biddix.

William Arthur (Bill) Moles, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023 at the home of his daughter with his family by his side.
