Cherokee High School played host to the Cherokee XC Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16.  Over 20 high school and middle school teams came to the event on a nice late summer morning.

Hayesville won the boys varsity title and Smoky Mountain won the girls varsity.  Swain County won the boys middle school title and Hayesville won the girls middle school.

“I think my teams did very well,” said Eddie Swimmer, Cherokee head cross country coach.  “It’s a tough course, but a fast course.  There was good competition, and they stuck in there and they showed some grit, some guts, and determination.”

Led by Oztin Swayney who placed third, the Cherokee Braves middle school boys team placed second.  Coach Swimmer noted that is indicative of how the program at Cherokee is growing.

“Running is a very scientific sport in training the body to get a person up to a good level of physical conditioning,” he commented. “Start them young to get them in the correct form of running, and that feeds right into high school where we’ll get more technical.”

Coach Swimmer added that the middle school is really developing now into a good feeder program for the high school teams.  “It’s showing.  In the years that we’ve been here now, the progress is really showing.  I’m pleased with these kids…cross country is a tough sport – mentally, physically, and spiritually. A true athlete should test themselves by running cross country.”
