The Cherokee Youth Center held a pow wow on Friday, Nov. 20 to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

Sherry Crowe and other Youth Center staff worked together to organize the event which featured local northern drum group Awohali consisting of lead singer Mike Thompson, Josh Littlejohn, Dale French, Duck Lossiah and special youth singer Eason Esquivel.  The emcee for the day was Eddie Crowe.

Dancers from the Youth Center included: Little Bear, Kera Welch, Mela Perkins, Naomi Bryant, Deliah Esquivel, Tanis Esquivel and Tanin Esquivel. Other dancers were granddaughters of Youth Center Staff Nellie Smith: Rebecca and Vanessa. Two parents helped out by dancing as well including Amber Crowe and Dawn Russell.

Following several intertribal dances, a Friendship Dance was held, and all kids that wanted to join in were invited to come out and dance.   An Intertribal song was the last dance of the event. Most of the kids from the center stayed on the floor and danced. Before everyone left, the kids thanked Awohali for singing and helping their pow wow.
